Update 07/31/20:This review has been updated with the results of the trials.
mercedes-benzThe factory-built, high-performance luxury SUV was actually invented in 1999 when he installed a 5.4-liter V-8 in his ML-Class ute and called itML55 AMGThe stats and numbers for that car (342 horsepower, 376 pound-feet of torque, 60 mph) look strange twenty years later. But at the time, the company called it the world's fastest ute. Today, more than half of Mercedes-AMG's sales are utility vehicles, and it makes sense that the performance sub-brand will continue to push the bar even higher for its SUVs. redesigned2021 GLE63 smallIt is one of the latest models that faithfully adheres to the tradition of superhorses.
Pros: Incredible acceleration from the twin-turbo V-8, smoothest stop-start system, awesome ride and handling balance.
Gulping down up to 18.9 psi of boost, the GLE63 S's twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 makes 603 horsepower at 6,500 rpm, 627 pound-feet at 2,500 rpm and the V-8's deep, roaring roar. That's 26 more horsepower and 66 pound-feet more than the previous version's twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8. The GLE63's 4.0-liter engine is also the first AMG V-8 to feature Mercedes' 48-volt EQ Boost hybrid system, which places a motor-generator between the engine and the standard nine-speed automatic transmission.
In addition to powering the V-8's accessories, including the electric air conditioning compressor and electric water pump, the motor-generator briefly makes up to 21 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque to reduce engine lag and They will, in theory, boost your fuel economy. This extra power is handled with silky refinement right at idle, during gear changes, and in the few other situations where the V-8 can stall while the turbo ramps up. The added electronics also make it one of the fastest and smoothest engine start-stop systems we've ever experienced. But let's be clear: it does not increase engine power. While the system's torque occasionally overlaps with that of the V-8, the electric motor's boost never exceeds the engine's peak horsepower.
Calibration of the nine-speed gearbox in the GLE63 S is a little slow, which can be frustrating on rough roads. Even in its most aggressive Race drive mode, the transmission tends to upshift entering corners and often becomes numb at too high gears. Engaging the nine-speed manual fixes that by letting you keep gears at the engine's 7,100-rpm rev limiter, but downshifting is still slower than we'd like.

rhythm and space
Despite its bulk, the 5,568-pound GLE63 S never sends more than half of its engine's torque to the front wheels thanks to its standard limited-slip rear differential and rear-biased all-wheel-drive system. The car hits 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds and hits the quarter mile in 11.9 seconds at 117 mph, making it one of the fastest midsize cars around.high performance SUVwe have evaluated. in comparison withThe last GLE63 S we tested, it's 253 pounds lighter, and the new model is 0.3 seconds quicker to 60 mph for the entire quarter, 0.2 seconds quicker and 2 mph quicker. The acceleration figures of the new AMG are also slightly higher than the latest figures.Porsche Cayenne Turbo 541 hp, AlthoughCayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid de 670 CVDrop it by a few tenths at 60 mph and pedal through the quarter mile for almost half a second and 4 mph. We haven't tested the update yet.2020 BMW X5 M, which makes up to 617 horsepower in the Competition trim, but expect it to get an AMG-like performance boost and in keeping with the GLE63 S era. We smell the brewing from a comparison test.
Low: Lazy drivetrain adjustment, moderately expensive, less full grip than leading competitors.
The dynamic engine mounts, for the first time in an AMG SUV, stiffen automatically depending on driving conditions. Its main advantage is to improve the response of the GLE63 S and improve feedback from the chassis. Likewise, the suspension of this AMG is noticeably more rigid in its Sport, Sport+ or Race configurations. The adaptive dampers are tightened by 25 percent in Sport and 40 percent in Sport+ and Race.

AMG also installed a 48-volt Active Ride Control anti-roll system, which helps keep body roll down in more aggressive environments. Even with our $3,250 test car's optional 22-inch wheels (21s are standard), the GLE63 S deftly soaks up bumps and mid-corner undulations without feeling brittle. In the Comfort setting, however, the ride quality is almost too plush. In general, AMG's suspension setup can lower the GLE63 S by 0.4 inches per hour to reduce drag, or increase it by 2.2 inches for increased ground clearance in Trail and Sand modes.
What the AMG's chassis setup doesn't do is generate the impressive levels of grip we've recorded for other popular SUVs in this segment. Rounding the GLE63 S hard into a corner, a predominantly safety (albeit important) sense of understeer rears its head. Despite being fitted with huge Yokohama Advan Sport V107 summer tires (285/40R-22s front and 325/35R-22s rear), our example ran around the cove on just 0.91g off the bar. That figure is 0.04g less than the previous GLE63 S, and well below the mark set by the two new Cayenne Turbos we've tested, both of which boast more than 1.00g of lateral grip. While our test car's stopping distance of 161 feet at 70 mph is a slight improvement over its predecessor, the norm for the segment is now around 150 feet.
hit the target
The 2021 GLE63 S has a base price of $114,945. Its AMG styling should be easy to spot, including vertical louvres in the grille, an aggressive front bumper with large black air intakes, flared wheel arches, and two large rectangular exhaust tips that protrude from the rear diffuser. If you want a livelier, yet modern look with less cargo space,GLE63 S coupe versionIt will be available before the end of the year.

On both models, you'll find a voluminous three-spoke sports steering wheel with aluminum paddle shifters, along with AMG heated, ventilated front sports seats with thick bolsters covered in standard Nappa leather. A blind-spot assist is also included, but Mercedes still charges you $1,950 for the Driver Assistance Plus package (active lane change and lane-keep assist, stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, active steering and parking assist from emergency, etc.) Example was $134,235 as tested, with a host of added extras ranging from the Energizing Comfort Plus package ($1650) to a carbon fiber hood ($1500) and automatic climate control from four zones ($860).
Twenty years after AMG introduced its first high-performance luxury SUV, many enthusiasts (including us at times) still struggle to see the appeal of monster-powered tanks like the GLE63 S. Yet the willing buyer pipeline of such Vehicles continue to grow rapidly as the overall performance of each new generation improves. For proof, just look at the many imitators that have hit the market, from Aston Martin to BMW to Lamborghini. While the new GLE63 S isn't exactly the driver-focused machine of some of its sportier (and grippier) counterparts, it does bring the excess that Mercedes-AMG customers have come to expect from one of its predecessors, power and sophistication. part.

More parking spaces. This is what Scott Oldham really wanted out of life. His three-car garage and his driveway are full. Necessity, combined with poor financial judgment and an inability to sell anything, has forced the second-generation auto writer and smoke-burn aficionado to hide some of his prized American classics in a cab park near Los Angeles. . But not the big 1969 Camaro he built with his dad; that one was close to home.
